Java Card Platform 3.0 Specification Available


Sun Microsystems and Java Card Forum (JCF) announced the availability of Java Card version 3.0 Platform specifications. According to a press release, this release is a step forward for smart card chip manufacturers, smart card vendors, and Java Card platform implementation providers.

The Java Card platform 3.0 specification is available in two editions: Classic Edition and Connected Edition. The Classic Edition is based on the Java Card Version 2.2.2 and is suitable for bankcards, or SIM cards for mobile phones.

Connected Edition includes enhanced execution environment, along with new network-oriented features such as support for web applications.

The new Java Card Virtual Machine offers developers the ability to use standard tools and techniques, such as the Java Servlet API to create Java Card 3.0 technology-based applications.
